The following is a close paraphrase of something I overheard either at
Zen Center or at a math seminar. I remember scribbling it down and later
typing it into my journal.

"Nothing stands in isolation; everything asserts an influence upon all else.
Just as few things can be considered pure, nothing is absolute; within the
darkness of sorrow lie the seeds for happiness and contentment. Thus,
everything contains the seeds of its opposite."

In the Strata of Sorrow
Amongst the valleys and canyons of grief,
we seek the sunshine of joy in the
granite nooks and crannies.
Happiness is tucked away,
hiding within the strata of sorrow.
Waiting to be found.
