Well Buckaroos,
This was a fun one.
Phil and I started out on Tucson's east side from Old Spanish Trail and Broadway, through Vail to the Marsh Station Road,
and about 10 miles of I-10 (not too bad, just loud) to the Holiday Inn on Hwy. 90, about 9 miles north of Kartchner Caverns.
Tailwinds once we started east. Phil was on a 72" gear and traveling light, a Barley bag on a Bagman. I was on a 65" gear and traveling heavy, a stuffed Baggins Hoss with Nitto support rack.
Holiday Inn was very comfy with HBO and continental breakfast. We rode into Benson for Mex food at a place called Magaly's. It was really good. Dark mole chili sauce. Rode back in the dark, had my Schmidt hub. Roughly 50 miles for the day.
Day 2 was headwind day as we headed south on 90 to Mustang Corners (Whetstone).
Started out in the 40's but warmed up quickly. The first 9 miles was a good climb to Kartchner Caverns. I had switched over to a 73.8" gear and whined the whole way.
It's rolling down to Mustang Corners with great views of the Whetstones to your left and the Dragoons across the valley to your right. Traffic wasn't bad and we got a few encouraging "beep-beeps". Lunched at Mustang Corners then headed west on Hwy. 82 towards Sonoita.
It was a rolling climb into headwinds that got headier as we crossed the divide between the Mustangs (where they filmed Red River in 1948) and the Whetstones (where Earp killed Curly Bill Brosius in '82). I was out of the saddle and spinning 20 rpm on some of the hills.
Started to get real chilly in Sonoita. Had coffee and met an older couple who had flown in from the Bay and ridden, fully loaded, up 83. They were headed towards Parker Canyon Lake.
Even with the winds, riding from Sonoita to Patagonia was a gas. Thousand foot drop, smooth road, outstanding vistas. Met the wives and kids at Stage Stop Inn for New Years. The Stage Stop has gone down hill in the last 5 years. Rooms are rattier and more expensive, foods not as good, but Patagonia itself makes up for it. All and all an enjoyable quickie tour even though Phil had to wait up for me half the time.
